We Are Lichen

by Razielle Aigen

Lichens are formed of fungus and algae, each retains its individual identity when the two unique structures join in a symbiotic relationship to compose a singular, cohesive organism. Inspired by this natural phenomenon, We Are Lichen unfolds in nine movements interpretively based on the lichen life cycle. Commonly used phrases and idioms are remixed into altered contexts, creating new contingencies of language in fragments that weave together the inner world with undercurrents of political and social consciousness. By diffusing the polarity between personal and public spheres, a confused and re-fused meaning of self and other is generated. We Are Lichen features as the textual component of a text-based, multimedia installation. Printed on acetate, the written content is nested within the sculptural elements: crochet, branches, eggshells, sound-scapes, paper, and fibres that provide a three-dimensional “page” in which the text is embedded. The installation was exhibited as part of Image De Femmes, 21st Edition, at Galerie Mile-End, Montréal, QC, 2014.
