The Old Guitarist

by Jesse Anger

No fraying cup in the frame,
just you, her curvature and blue—

translated to a muted string.
Doubled, you thrum dumbly.

Between the bridge-pin and your chin
her compliment of orange dimmed

by a dust of dead skin,
your bone-fingers round her neck.

The ringing-out that is silence
fills your lobe— cobalt, midnight.

I’ve seen you in the evening station
leaning after a leaving train,

at dawn, cavern-eyed and shaken,
praying, sketched-out and strange,

in the white static swell, coming on—
coloring a brush with death.
