July, Today

by Laura Rojas

I’ve been hearing things with my
eyes closed
and reached the center of the
universe in seven months
once, when I was only eighteen

my voice has been changing
i’m not sure what
i’m writing about here
the finality of life, maybe
or the personification of an object,
the fork looks around restlessly
the coffee mug
is patiently waiting its turn

I find it easier to write about myself
than about someone
who doesn’t exist
but I can’t do that all the time

make me a song
make me something highly unlikely
to unravel,
pine tree needles
an afternoon listening to you
speak
somewhere else
