afterthought

by Laura Rojas

the house was evergreen
streets silent like the waters’ edge
a harbor
“all of us, together”
and honey bread

sometimes I think about the morning
during the evening
or the afternoon
during the night
the shoebox in the back of my closet
the hammer you carry around to bars and
sweet freedom
the way her voice grows quiet
as orange haziness builds and shrinks

like
dust mites
under the rotting floorboards
or the way
our tongues are split
