Encroaching oblivion

by Helen Robertson

Am I to watch from the parapet
As my kin are burned? Together
We are collected into a book
And bound. Each individual
A tale from an anthology
No longer our own.

Our history has been incinerated
But we words remember.

You try to convince me
She erodes our new foundation
But I know the past. I see the future
And cast off you will use her
As fuel to burn the edifice
On which I stand.
